I’m 27/M, working a corporate job. Two years ago, I randomly met a girl on Instagram, and over time, we became really good friends. We talked almost every day, shared so many things, and built a genuine friendship. It was never about love or a relationship—it was simply a true friendship bond. A few months ago, she was diagnosed with cancer. I tried to give her as much positivity and support as I could. She was incredibly strong and confident about fighting it. She fought really hard, but unfortunately, she passed away last month. Since then, I’ve been feeling terrible. Life is so unpredictable. I keep looking at our old chats, call history, and pictures, and it completely breaks me. I still can’t understand how someone can be here one moment and suddenly be gone at such a young age. What hurts the most is knowing that I’ll never get to see the rest of her life—the things she would have experienced, the people she would have met, and the person she would have become. Her life ended far too early, and somehow, I’m left with all these memories. I don’t know why I feel this much pain, but I do. I’m just broken and struggling to accept that she’s really gone.

Grief doesn’t become less valid just because the relationship was a friendship. You lost someone who had become an important part of your everyday life, so the pain you’re feeling is completely understandable. What makes this especially difficult is the suddenness and the fact that she was so young. You’re not only mourning her presence, but also the future you imagined she would have had. There is no fixed timeline for accepting such a loss. Looking at old chats and photos may hurt right now, but those memories are also proof that the friendship mattered. Give yourself permission to grieve without judging yourself for “feeling too much.” Talk to people you trust, maintain your routine as much as possible, and gradually allow the memories to become something you can carry rather than something that only causes pain. You may never stop missing her, but with time, the pain can soften and the friendship can become a meaningful part of your life story rather than an open wound. Be patient with yourself. Healing from genuine loss takes time.
Grief is a long period, take care.
I’m so sorry for your loss brother. True friendship doesn’t need a label. What you had was real, and the pain you feel proves how much she meant to you. She fought hard, and you stood by her. That’s love. Take care of yourself. She wouldn’t want you broken ❤️
Life is highly unpredictable; enjoy the present moment
