My relatives criticized the home I spent ten years saving for

M32 — After almost a decade of saving, I finally bought my first 3BHK apartment. It cost me almost ₹1 crore, including everything. I invited everyone over for the housewarming, expecting it to be a happy occasion. But the questions and comments were mostly negative: “Why does the flat feel so small?” “The kitchen isn’t big enough.” “Car parking is too small.” “This bedroom isn’t that good.” Almost 90% of the comments came from relatives. Only a couple of families and friends genuinely appreciated it. I can’t talk back. I can’t avoid them either. But honestly, I don’t want people like that around me. Many of my relatives are financially better off than me. Their kids are enjoying life without much pressure, while their fathers run businesses. But here I am — working, saving, and building something for my own family, one step at a time. So, to anyone who visits someone’s new home: Even if you don’t like the house. Even if you think it’s small. Even if you would have built it differently. Just say something kind. “It’s a beautiful home.” “I really like the colours.” “Congratulations — you’ve done a great job.” You don’t have to fake admiration. Just show a little kindness. I know I shouldn’t care about their opinions, and honestly, I don’t want to. But when you’ve spent almost a decade saving for something, negative comments about it still hurt. Sometimes, a little kindness costs nothing.

Why do you crave for validation from others? Your money, your asset, your achievement, the only validation you need is from yourself.

Those relatives are just jealous and could not imagine that the confessor can buy a house on their own. So just tell them your house your choice

This is the very reason I didn’t invite anyone to our house warming ceremony. It was only me, my husband and pujari ji. That’s it. It was our moment and we thoroughly lived it. Today no one remembers that we purchased flat and I am very much ok with it.

Hire me to talk back to them. Would be worth every penny invested 😅

Relatives will always find something. "Small kitchen", "parking chota" - next time "accha hai" bol ke topic change kar do. You don't owe them explanations. You owe your family a home. And you delivered. Proud of you 👏

Congratulations dude. The positive feedback, validations you crave will be mostly coming from strangers who don’t even know you. The relatives are almost always jealous and competitive. So ignore them.
