F, Posting on behalf of my close friend. π Plz Don't Ignore πππ Her 9-month old baby boy has been diagnosed with profound hearing loss and speech loss. After consulting multiple doctors they have been advised that he may need a Cochlear implant after he turns 1 year old if his health and hemoglobin levels are suitable. The parents have normal hearing and speech but the baby's maternal grandmother was born with hearing and speech loss so doctors suspect it may be genetic. They have already consulted a hospital in Chennai but before making such an important decision they want to hear from people with real experience and medical professionals. They are even willing to travel abroad if there is a better proven treatment available. Kindly help us with the following: β’ Anyone who has undergone this surgery or has a child who did, please share your experience. β’ What are the pros and cons of cochlear implant surgery? β’ Are there any advanced treatments or surgeries available that may give better results than a cochlear implant? β’ After surgery will hearing and speech become normal? What are the possible complications? β’ Which hospital and doctor would you recommend for the best treatment? β’ We have already consulted a hospital in Chennai. Should we consider any other hospitals in India? β’ If you are from another country and know of any advanced treatment, specialists, or successful procedures, please share your suggestions. ππ This baby is their long awaited blessing and they want to make the best possible decision for his future. Every genuine suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. β€οΈ Thank you Admin π

Hi, If the baby has 100% hearing loss or was born with a hearing problem in both ears, this surgery may not be effective. Even then, itβs a good idea to consult 2β3 doctors and get multiple opinions before making any decision. This surgery is very expensive, carries certain risks, and requires many restrictions and precautions after the operation.
Pls consult Dr .Mohan kameshwaran from MADRAS ENT RESEARCH FOUNDATION
They don't have any other option than cochlear implant
Surgery is effective only if speech therapy started and maintained until kid reached age 10-12. It's not guaranteed that kid will talk like normal human. Try the option of having hearing aids and start the speech therapy as soon as possible. Initial few years will be difficult but you have to have patience and courage to face. There is some government hospital which does it for free of charge , only thing is we need to reach out to NGO for fund, once fund is received they will do it (Nair hospital, Mumbai Central) If you are going ahead with surgery, it is costly. After surgery also, device maintenance is quite expensive.
Keep the faith. God will carry you through this.
