I still remember my first crush from a winter afternoon in 2009

It was a soothing winter afternoon in December 2009. I was at a school in Chetla in South Calcutta to appear for a mock test organized by a reputed coaching institute ahead of my Class 10 Board examination. It was the first day of the test, and my mother had accompanied me to the center. It was on that day that I saw her for the very first time. She was remarkably sweet and beautiful—enough to instantly capture the heart of a quiet, introverted schoolboy who had never thought himself worthy of love or romance, and who had never indulged in such emotional ventures unlike many of his classmates. I can still picture her clearly: she was wearing a denim jacket with matching jeans, and her lovely hair was tied up in a neat little bun. She, too, was an examinee appearing for the same test. There was an innate grace and poise in her mannerisms—the kind often seen in bright students from reputed Calcutta schools back then. It wasn't deliberate snobbery, but a quiet, natural elegance that subtly set her apart. She was, without a doubt, my first crush. I had never felt anything like it before. I watched her from a short distance—a surreal moment, especially with my mother standing right beside me. When we were guided inside, my seat was allotted in a large examination hall. Before sitting down, my eyes searched the room, hoping against hope that her seat might be in the same hall. But among the sea of unfamiliar faces, I couldn't find her. The mock tests spanned over seven or eight days. On the second afternoon, I saw her again, feeling the exact same flutter in my heart as the first time. That turned out to be the last time I ever saw her. For the remaining days, within the quiet limits of my shyness, my eyes constantly scanned the school campus, searching in vain. A month later, in January 2010, I returned to the same venue for another set of mock tests. I hoped against hope for just a fleeting glimpse of her, even if only for a few seconds. But it was not to be. She had simply vanished into the rhythm of the city, never to be seen again. Sixteen years have passed since that winter afternoon, and life has changed tremendously. Her face has grown hazy in my memory over time, and if our paths were to cross today, I doubt I would even recognize her. Yet, the essence of her sweetness and beauty still radiates in my mind, carrying the exact warmth of how I felt back then. Wherever she is today, I sincerely wish her well. May she remain untouched by the dust, filth, and daily drudgery of human existence. And may she continue to radiate that same unparalleled sweetness that once captured the heart of a quiet, forgotten boy on a long-lost winter afternoon.

Understanding This Situation

This confession captures the poignant tension between a brief, real-world encounter and the enduring power of a highly idealized memory. The author’s experience illustrates how a fleeting moment from youth can be preserved in amber, surviving sixteen years of personal evolution and the gradual fading of specific details like a person's face. The central emotional conflict lies in the contrast between the reality of a stranger's life—which has inevitably moved forward, subject to the complexities of adulthood—and the narrator's desire to keep her frozen in an idealized state of sweetness, untouched by the mundane struggles of human existence. A careful reader might consider the psychological function of such memories. For a self-described quiet, introverted schoolboy who felt unworthy of romance, this brief encounter may have served as a safe, low-stakes awakening to romantic feelings. Because there was never any actual interaction, the crush remains unblemished by the friction of real-world relationships. This projection allows the memory to function not as a longing for a specific person, but as a nostalgic anchor for a particular era of the narrator's own life. The narrative reveals how we sometimes use strangers to benchmark our own emotional growth, preserving them as symbols of innocence and untapped potential from our youth.

Things Worth Thinking About

  • How does the complete lack of interaction with a crush allow a person to project their own ideal romantic fantasies onto them?
  • In what ways do we use memories of strangers to anchor ourselves to specific eras of our own past?
  • Is it fair to wish that someone remains untouched by the realities of life, or does that desire reflect a preference for fantasy over human complexity?
