F29 | CTC not relevant | Continued from confession C27684. I am a Bihari - origin girl born and brought up in West Bengal. I had been hardwired to believe in caste over everything else. I liked a Bengali guy in my hometown's gym. To check our compatibility, I asked him about his caste, which offended him and made him cut me off. After reading the responses to the confession, I wondered whether caste is important in the first place. I asked my father (a furniture retailer) and my mother (a Physics teacher) about it. My father said that caste is important, but my mother said that caste is important only if both people consider it important. My parents argued for a few days, but eventually my father agreed with my mother. Back in the gym, I was determined to get back in the Bengali guy's good books. While he was working out (with earphones on to ignore me), I deliberately faked an emergency in which I got myself trapped under a loaded barbell. I wasn't really trapped, but he came to rescue me. He removed his earphones to explain how to do the exercise safely (I already knew it, but I pretended to be an attentive learner). We happened to leave the gym around the same time. I ran up to him to thank him again, and also to say sorry about my earlier question about his caste. I explained that while I had been hardwired to think in terms of caste, my experience of living among Bengalis (and specifically him) had opened my eyes to the inherent absurdity of caste. He seemed to accept my apology. Since then, we have been talking normally again in the gym. How do I proceed from this point onwards? I don't want to make another mistake because of a cultural difference. Mostly, I want to hear the opinions of Bengalis and other casteless people. I am not very interested in the opinions of people who had commented that the Bengali guy could be from a 'lower caste'.

Bengalis are generally very liberal minded and open to discussions of all kinds. If you want to get friendly with this guy, read some great books, watch some famous Bengali movies, find out some interesting places in the city that are artistic or intellectual in nature, and ask him out for a coffee so that you could start making some interesting discussions. Also music might interest him so try to strike a discussion along these lines. Food is one more category every Bengali loves. Durga Puja coming up, ask him his plans. So basically you need to make yourself bold and interesting for him to show interest in you. All the best 😊
