I just wanted to share my story. You can hate me if you want. You can judge me if you want. All I know is that I made mistakes, and until now, I still carry the weight of those regrets. It all started in 2020. I met someone unexpectedly. We clicked right away, and before we knew it, naging kami agad. Ang rupok namin, no? I was 18 years old, and he was around 16. I knew he was still young and exploring life, but I still chose to take the risk because I was excited to experience love. Not long after, I had to go back to my hometown. I told him he couldn't come because I wasn't out yet, and I wasn't ready for people to know about us. But to my surprise, he showed up at the terminal before I even arrived. Wala na akong nagawa kundi isama siya. I introduced him to my parents as my classmate. Then, suddenly, the pandemic happened. Nag-lockdown ang buong bansa. I was terrified. I kept asking myself, "Paano ko itatago ang relasyon namin? Hanggang kailan ito?" Nobody knew when the pandemic would end, so we just lived one day at a time. We had a small kubo beside our house where people could stay. Every night, doon kami natutulog. It wasn't unusual because our family was always welcoming to visitors, especially during those difficult times. That little kubo witnessed everything. It witnessed our happiest moments, but it also witnessed our biggest fights. He cheated on me several times. Kahit nasa bahay namin siya, may mga ka-chat pa rin siyang iba, even his ex. I wanted to send him home so many times, but because of the lockdown, it wasn't possible. So I stayed. We fought, we cried, we forgave, and we repeated the same cycle over and over again. We were also young and reckless. We didn't fully understand the importance of protecting ourselves. Looking back now, I know how irresponsible we were. After almost a year together during the lockdown, things slowly changed. He changed. He proved that he wanted to become a better person. He looked for small jobs in the neighborhood—cleaning houses, carrying heavy loads—anything just to help us survive. I handled the money he earned and budgeted it for both of us and for my family because those were difficult times. Some of it, I even invested in gardening since plants became popular during the pandemic. Little by little, we saved money. More importantly, we both matured. When traveling became possible again, he finally had to go home. I didn't want him to leave, but he also had a family waiting for him. After he left, I noticed something was wrong with me. I kept losing weight even though I was eating normally. Strange rashes appeared on my body. I became weaker and weaker. My family grew worried, and we went from one check-up to another. I was given different medicines, but nothing worked. My parents tried everything they could think of, even herbal remedies, hoping I would recover. But I kept getting worse. Eventually, I told them I couldn't take it anymore, and they rushed me to the hospital. The doctor spoke to me privately and asked me questions about my personal life and whether I had certain experiences that could explain my condition. I was in denial because I was scared. Eventually, they recommended an HIV test. By then, I was already critically ill. I had to stay in isolation while waiting because no one could accompany me immediately. That night, I was completely alone. I could barely breathe. I honestly thought I wasn't going to make it. With the little strength I had left, I managed to press the emergency call button. The next morning, the doctor told my family that I almost didn't survive—but I fought. Then came the moment I feared the most. The doctor asked if I was ready to hear the results and whether I wanted my father present. I said no because I was afraid. But my father insisted. "Anak ko 'yan. May karapatan akong malaman." Then the doctor told us... I was HIV positive. I expected anger. I expected disappointment. Instead... My family cried. My father looked at me and simply said, "Anak kita. Magpagaling ka." I broke down. From that moment on, I promised myself that if God gave me another chance, I would never waste it. I prayed harder than I ever had before. I asked for forgiveness. I begged for another opportunity to live. And little by little... I got better. I will forever be grateful to the doctors, nurses, and everyone at the hospital who never treated me differently. We weren't rich, but they never made me feel less because of my condition. Meanwhile, my partner stayed by my side emotionally even from afar. He comforted me every single day. Eventually, I recovered. I returned to school. Later on, what I feared also happened to him. He became HIV positive too. But instead of blaming me, he told me, "Alam kong mangyayari rin 'to. Handa na ako. Basta walang iwanan." That became our promise. When he was hospitalized, I wanted to be there, but because of hospital policies, I couldn't stay with him. His father took care of everything while I waited and prayed. Thankfully... He recovered too. We continued our lives together. We finished school. I immediately started working while he stayed home for a while. As years passed, I became exhausted. I worked day and night because I wanted us to have a better future. I wanted us to save money, build a home, and finally become stable after everything we'd been through. But when I came home from work every day, he mostly spent his time playing games. I was the one cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, and carrying almost every responsibility. Eventually... I broke. What I did next was my biggest mistake. I cheated. Not once. More than once. I'm not saying I had a reason. There is never a good reason to betray someone. It was my choice. It was my mistake. And I will carry that regret for the rest of my life. I hurt the person who stayed with me during the darkest chapter of my life. I apologized countless times. I begged for forgiveness. But sometimes, love isn't enough to undo the damage we've caused. We eventually separated. After we broke up, life slowly became better for both of us. He found a job in Manila. He became stable. He could finally buy the things he wanted and go to the places he dreamed of visiting. As for me, I also became stable. I now have a career I'm proud of, and I'm currently pursuing my Master's degree and Professional Education. Ironically... This is the life we once dreamed of building together. We're finally financially stable. We can now afford dates without worrying about money. We can finally buy the things we used to only dream about. But we're no longer together. Sometimes, I ask myself... What if I stayed stronger? What if I held on a little longer? Maybe things would have been different. But life doesn't move backward. Today, I'm genuinely happy for him. I pray for his happiness, success, and good health. As for me, I continue moving forward while carrying the lessons from my past. The mistakes I made changed me. They humbled me. They taught me to value trust, forgiveness, health, family, and second chances. I hurt him. He also hurt me in different ways. But I take full responsibility for the mistakes I made. And until now... I still regret them. This isn't the end of our story. There's still more to tell. Maybe someday, when I'm finally ready. For now, I just wanted to share this part of my life. Not to ask for sympathy. Not to justify my mistakes. But to remind everyone that people make wrong decisions, people can change, and sometimes the greatest lessons come from the deepest pain. If you've read this far, thank you. And if there's one thing I hope you take away from my story, it's this: Take care of your health. Protect yourself. Never take your loved ones for granted. And when life gives you a second chance, don't waste it.
