How one toxic situation destroyed an entire team I’ve been thinking for a long time about whether to write this, but I genuinely want to hear what people would do in a situation like this. A new manager joined a CloudOps team. Unlike the usual stereotype of managers, he was extremely approachable, friendly and supportive. He built the team, hired a few new people, recognized people who deserved it, pushed for good hikes and rewards, and generally tried to create an environment where people could speak openly without unnecessary politics. But while he was trying to protect and build his team, something very disturbing was happening underneath the surface. Two members of the team became extremely close and eventually started a relationship. They were constantly together, but the manager and some other teammates apparently didn't understand what was actually going on. The man eventually resigned, but was retained. After that, his behavior reportedly changed dramatically. What started as a workplace relationship turned into something much darker. The woman was married and had a child. She was living away from her family for work because the company didn't have a work-from-home option. According to what I heard, the man became increasingly possessive. There are allegations that he drugged her, recorded intimate moments without her consent, and later used those recordings to control and blackmail her. At some point, he apparently wanted her to leave her family and be with him permanently, while also wanting to remove his own wife from his life. When she eventually realized the seriousness of what had happened and decided to return to her family, things became even worse. The man allegedly started making threats, making serious accusations against the manager and other team members, and behaving erratically. Eventually, his employment was terminated because of his conduct, but that apparently didn't stop the harassment. The alleged blackmail and abuse continued outside the workplace, while the manager—who had originally tried so hard to build a healthy team—was left emotionally devastated by everything that happened. And that's the part that bothers me the most. One person's actions didn't just destroy a relationship. They damaged multiple families, affected innocent teammates, destroyed trust within a workplace, and apparently left a good manager questioning everything he had built. I'm not posting this to decide who is right or wrong based on rumors. I'm posting because I genuinely want to understand: What should someone do when a workplace relationship turns into alleged blackmail, threats, non-consensual recordings and harassment? How should a manager protect himself and his team when allegations are being thrown around? How can the woman safely get away from someone who is allegedly threatening and blackmailing her? And what should colleagues do when they realize that something much more serious than ordinary workplace drama is happening? My biggest takeaway is that workplace relationships aren't just gossip when coercion, threats or intimate recordings become involved. At that point, this is far beyond office politics, and the people involved need proper professional and legal help rather than trying to handle it through the team. I also feel terrible for the manager. He came in trying to make the team better, and somehow ended up carrying the emotional damage from a situation he didn't create. What would you do if you were in his position?
1. U dont shit in the place u eat. So, keep ur private affairs outside of office, even if its a colleague. Thats a boundary u need to be firm on. If the other partner is not respecting that, terminate the relationship cz that personality isn’t suitable to share life. 2. Woman/man shud raise concern with HR n relevant team, legally too if they figure out they r in a mess, even if it means they need to face consequences of their actions. Cz facing that one moment of embarrassment is so much better than living in fear and continuing to be in the gutter. Fear is a form of control fr the abuser. 3. If everything was done jus as per company policies, i dont understand why manager is left devastated. According to ur draft, he has great ppl handling skills! Then what left him torn??? Therz smthng unsaid here.. Its fine. Not everything is permanent. This phase gave u memories, learning n experience. Move past and dont dwell on it!
