My husband wants a divorce over a political joke at dinner

32F. Politics ruined my life. I’ve been married to my husband for 8 years, and we have a 5-year-old son. My husband has always been a very loving and caring person. He has supported me through everything in our married life. Honestly, I never had any major complaints about him. But things have gone horribly wrong now, and I still can’t believe how quickly everything changed. I’ve recently started following Tamil Nadu politics quite closely, while my husband has always been a strong supporter of the DMK and holds the party in very high regard. His brother and I would sometimes make fun of him about it. We’d send him political reels, memes, and troll posts. He never really reacted to them. Occasionally, he would tell us, If you want to criticize something, at least have a constructive discussion instead of just making fun of it. But we honestly never took it seriously. To us, it was just harmless fun between family members. Yesterday, while we were having dinner, politics somehow came up in the conversation. His brother and I started teasing him in the same funny way we always do. He suddenly said something like, whatever position we are in today, DMK has also played a role in it. I studied engineering through one of their schemes, so at least we should respect what they have done. We laughed and told him like We studied because of our own hard work and knowledge. Nobody helped us study. It was said completely in a joking tone. There was no intention to insult him personally. He went completely silent. He sat there for a few minutes, didn't finish his food, and walked away.About an hour later, he came back. I heard him shouting my name from the hall. Then he started breaking things. When I came downstairs, he was screaming at me like I had never seen him before.I genuinely didn't recognize the person standing in front of me. When his brother tried to intervene, my husband turned on him too and beat him so badly that he had to be hospitalized with injuries. My husband took some of his clothes and left the house.Later, he called my parents and told them that he wanted a divorce and didn't want to live with me anymore. He is not answering my calls. I'm completely lost. I still can't understand how a political argument that was supposed to be nothing more than family teasing could reach this point. What hurts the most is that this is the same man who has always been loving towards me and our son. He wouldn't go a single day without seeing our son. I've even made my son send him voice notes, hoping he'd at least respond to him, but he hasn't. Now even my in-laws are questioning me and his brother, asking why we kept speaking to him that way and making fun of something he clearly cared about. I'm not posting this looking for suggestions or advice. I just needed to say this somewhere. Don't let external things like politics become a reason to humiliate or hurt the people inside your own family. What feels like harmless fun to one person may be deeply hurtful to another.

Give it some time. Don't call repeatedly. Leave him a message or voice mail in a calm tone, that we will talk about things calmly. That's it, don't send messages also repeatedly. From your perspective it was a harmless banter or teasing, I can understand. Politics now a is sensitive topic and in many households boh spouses have different opinion about different political parties and leaders

Dear.. there is always a hairline difference between a political joke and personal joke. Now what u said is a personal insult and not a joke.Place yourself in his position where he and your sister joking on you at the dinner table. How would you have taken it. But whatever is said cannot be taken back. now only thing to do is to save your marriage. Track him down and apologise unconditionally. If possible involve and elderly person whom he respects as well. Choose peace over arguments. God bless

He wants divorce because he realized what he did is horribly wrong and he couldn’t face you. He is worried that you will or someone will bring this incident in future and he don’t want face that situation. Making him to attend some counseling session will sort this out. Now days I see Everyone wants to win the argument not ppl hearts.
