My husband found my secret abortion papers and thinks I cheated

I’m writing this while locked inside a toilet stall on the 4th floor of my office. It’s almost 9:30 PM. The floor lights are shut, the housekeeping staff is already wrapping up, and I am just sitting on the lid of this commode crying because I am terrified of going home. The thought of stepping into my own flat literally makes my chest feel tight. I don’t know who else to talk to. If I don't type this out somewhere, my head will explode. To give some background: I am 32F and work as a Senior Project Lead, earning ₹16 LPA. My husband is 36M, a Director in an IT firm earning ₹48 LPA. We have been married for 4 years. From the outside, everyone thinks we have an ideal life. But in typical middle-class families, because my husband earns three times what I do, my job was always treated like a side hobby. Both my in-laws and my own parents always had this attitude: "What is the need for her to work so hard? His salary is more than enough. She should just pack up, relax, and give us a grandchild." Except, that ₹16 LPA came after 8 years of pure struggle. It represents my entire self-respect. For the past year, I worked like an animal to lead a major client project. I was practically assured a promotion to Senior Manager by next quarter if the rollout went smooth. Then two months ago, a nightmare happened. My birth control pills had some timing mismatch, my cycle got delayed, and a home test showed two lines. I didn't feel happy. I felt complete terror. I knew our Indian family setup too well. The moment I told anyone, all decisions would be taken out of my hands. Everyone from my husband to both sets of parents would immediately force me to take a long leave or quit entirely, telling me not to take "unnecessary stress" since he earns ₹48 LPA anyway. My promotion, my 8 years of hard work, my independence—everything would just be erased. I completely lost my mind out of fear. Without telling my husband, without speaking to a single friend, I took a day off, visited a small clinic alone, and had an ab*rtion through pills. I suffered the unbearable cramps and bleeding over that weekend silently in our bathroom, telling him it was just a severe period. I took the clinic papers, bills, and scan report, shoved them inside an old brown envelope, and hid it under my college degree certificates right at the bottom of our bedroom Godrej almirah. I honestly thought I was just taking control of my life and saving my career. I thought what he didn't know wouldn't hurt our marriage. That stupidity cost me everything. Three weeks ago, we were gathering documents for a home loan prepayment. My husband was searching inside that almirah for our original property papers and FD receipts. He pulled out my brown envelope and opened it. When I reached home that night, he was sitting on the edge of the bed with those clinic papers in his hand. He didn't just look hurt; he looked completely disgusted with me. And then he dropped a question that made the ground beneath me vanish: "Whose ch*ld was this? Who were you sleeping with behind my back that you had to quietly go and fl*sh it out?" He refuses to believe that I did it for my career. In his mind, because we are financially very well-off, no Indian wife hides a pr*gnancy and terminates it unless she was having an aff*ir with a colleague and wanted to wipe out the evidence. He is totally convinced that I ch*ated on him, got pr*gnant with another man's baby, and got rid of it to save my skin. I went on my knees, cried, begged, gave him my unlocked phone to read every single WhatsApp chat, email, and Slack message. But he just sneered and said a woman who is clever enough to plan a secret ab*rtion is clever enough to delete messages. Out of pure anger and betrayal, he immediately called his parents, and then he called my parents. He called all of them over to our flat, threw the medical papers in the center table, and told them everything: that I was pr*gnant, that I killed the ch*ld secretly, and that he believes the baby wasn't even his. Ever since that night, my life has become a living hell. Both families have wanted a grandchild for years. Every family function, festival, and puja was always filled with questions about "good news." Now, both sides have joined hands to tear me apart. The emotional ab*se is relentless. My mother-in-law calls me a cold-blooded monster, a liar who destroyed her son's family, and keeps saying how his cousins' wives are real cultured women because they happily gave up jobs for family. But what completely broke my heart is my own family. My parents are not supporting me at all. My mother is having regular crying breakdowns, saying I brought total shame and dishonor to our family, asking what relatives will say if this leaks out. My father refuses to speak to me; he said over a call that I behaved like a criminal and he is ashamed that I am his daughter. At home, my husband treats me like a ghost. He moved into the guest room, locks it from inside, does not eat a single morsel cooked by me, and won't look at my face. Yesterday, I saw a printed visiting card of a family court lawyer kept right on the dining table. He is clearly preparing for a div*rce. I know how bad this sounds to everyone reading this. But the raw truth is, I don't regret the ab*rtion itself. It was my body, and I was not mentally ready to give up my career and financial standing. But the guilt of keeping it a secret from my husband is literally killing me from inside. By hiding it out of panic, I broke his trust permanently. I am completely alone right now. I have no support, no one to confide in, and both families treat me like an evil stranger. Please, anyone, tell me what to do. How can I ever prove to my husband that I was always 100% faithful to him, when the only medical proof that could show the ch*ld was his is gone forever? How do I make him trust me again when everyone is poisoning his mind? Is there any way to save this marriage, or have I completely ruined my entire life?

First of all, you are not a criminal or an evil person. You just prioritized yourself, and when we put ourselves first, people often call us selfish and try to make us feel guilty. There is No wrong in choosing oneself. You shouldn't have kept those papers, but what's done is done. All you can do now is talk to your husband and make him understand. If he refuses to see your point of view or trust you, there's not much you can do. You know you have been honest in the relationship. But your husband needs to trust what is right in front of him and what you are telling him, rather than suspecting something that isn't true. Maybe time will solve this.

Stop blaming yourself. You choose not to have a child now, forgive yourself. It's hard. But you'll have to do it. About proving something to someone, sometimes even if you give all the proof of the world, then also the other person will think things from their perspective and it might not be enough. So stop explaining, giving proof of anything. Then for your mental health, please seek help. It's not shame, it's necessary. You went through a pregnancy, abortion, family issue everything one after the another... So please take professional help. Try iCall or Vander wala or Telemanas. Let it out About saving your marriage, again it might take time. For now your own mental health should be your 1st priority. Marriage can be saved later.

You were not wrong for your choice, you were wrong the way you executed it. It's very hard for you, but now you need to be stronger. Try explaining things one last time without crying, begging or pleading. Do it in a composed way. If it doesn't work move out, face the break, accept the pain and start a new of your own. You are already a champion for standing your ground.

You could have still had a child and successfully career. I have many colleagues who have child and successful career. Even my wife. If your independence alone matters then there is no family. In family both men and women sacrifice. So it's a balance. Try to talk to your family with a counselor involved to sort it. But still you are not guilty of what you have done , so for you to accept others will be difficult.

Go to the clinic and search for some proofs or documents if they have any. Then move to the court and prove everything. And after that, just say goodbye and live your own life.

Whether to continue UNPLANNED pregancy or not is ALWAYS, ENTIRELY, ONLY preganant woman's decision. Your husband, parents, in-laws, NONE of them are intelligent, supportive or safe enough to understand and accept that. Hence you didn't INFORM them about it. Now there is NOTHING to regret or to prove anything to anyone. But at the same time you will have to accept the consequences for hiding info. So incase husband initiates divorce just sign it.

I wouldn't suggest anything that you could have done differently. What's done is done. The way forward from here is that you sit with your partner and have good communication, try to convince him first then the family, explain your situation and importance of job for you. I don't feel that there is another viable way

Good it happened with you , bloody mu__rderer . I wish you a thorough suffering throughout your life

Accountability and transparency were missing and this has led to the entire episode of mistrust and hatred. You should have been open and clear about the pregnancy than hiding it and aborting without his knowledge. If this leads to divorce then sign it happily and walk away as the relationship has reached a dead end.

If no one believes you, then they are not worth keeping in your life. I’m fine with your husband being upset about you keeping the abortion a secret; he has every right to feel betrayed. But to malign your character after knowing you for so long—and for your own parents to refuse to believe their daughter—shows how deep this rot runs in society, and I’m not okay with that. Your husband has every right to seek a divorce because you chose to have an abortion without informing him. But he has no right to malign your character without any valid proof. So, before he throws you out of his life, you should leave with dignity. Move to another city for a while and distance yourself from everyone until the storm settles. Later, have an honest conversation with your parents about why they behaved this way. Take your time, but that conversation is important for your own closure. But first, initiate the divorce and move out of the city.

Lol. If your career is the only thing which matters to you, you should not married. Your husband, your in-laws and even parents will never trust you for rest of your life. Best ending will be to sign divorce papers and allow that poor man to live peacefully. About you? - focus only on career, live separately and live the life the way you want to.

It's the Indian mentality to cross boundaries and force you to make life choices . It's Indian mentality again of Indian men to 'punish' their wife on finding any fault without any understanding. But you are born in India and you really cannot do anything about it . Even the Italian , Spainish, Colombians and many more have such dramatic families but they don't put it on the country, just their family issue . Let everyone know the truth once and for all , leave ,let them have time to cool ( a month or two ) and come back only if they trust you and they call you. Make sure you go and live in a known place so they don't suspect anymore. It makes no sense to live in a hell hole .

"I dont regret abortion", this says enough about you. Killing an innocent baby and hiding it from father is a joke for you? Your husband deserves a good wife, better accept his divorce and live your life as you wish.

You did what you thought it was right, but keeping those clinic papers was stupidity yaar, when you really wanted to hide it from everyone then why did you kept at home.. you should have thrown it somewhere. Character and izzat ek second me chalejati hai but Loyalty prove karne ke liye zindagi lagjati hai.. i really pray that God gives you strength and patience to overcome this torture which you don't deserve. My all support to you.. don't give up please..

Go back to the same clinic and check if they have your records and if there is a DNA sample so that you can prove the parentage of the unborn child. I am not sure but you can try. However, i truly feel is that career will come and go, promotions, money will come and go, there are many women who badly want to become mothers but pregnancy evades them. It is a blessing. But you chose your career and literally murdered an unborn child. That is bad karma. Now we can't turn the clock back. Be brave and ready to face the world, truth is on your side though you were morally wrong. There would be a light at the end of the tunnel, if you are genuinely true
