I am stuck between family expectations and a distant friend

I’m 27 and unmarried. A few months ago, I met a person through Instagram. We are the same age, and over time, we became really good friends. Later, I started developing feelings for him, but I never expressed them because I already knew that he saw me only as a friend. I had so many hopes of doing things for him, taking care of him, and being there for him. We both work in reputed companies and are doing well in our careers. But I don’t know what happened or why things suddenly changed. He started distancing himself from me. I tried so many times to understand what was going on, but now he says that he doesn’t feel like talking the way we used to and that he wants to maintain certain boundaries. Even when I’m very expressive about my feelings, his reactions are mostly normal. I don’t really see much excitement or effort from his side. Sometimes our communication is extremely good, and at other times, it becomes completely opposite. I honestly don’t understand where I stand with him. Unfortunately, my family has also started looking for alliances for me. They are looking for someone from a settled family, but I have absolutely no interest in getting married to any of the people they are showing me. I don’t know why, but my entire focus is still on this person. I’ve asked him so many times to meet me, but he keeps saying that he doesn’t want to meet. I’m finding it extremely difficult to keep hiding my feelings without expressing them. At the same time, I feel like he may not accept my feelings or may not feel the same way about me. I also know that he is going through some financial stress, but honestly, that is not an issue for me. I feel like I can take care of him, support him, and be there for him. I genuinely want to see him doing well and being happy. But I don’t know what to do anymore. I miss the way we used to talk. My feelings are only getting stronger day by day, and I’m finding it harder and harder to control them. At the very least, I want him to remain in my life as a friend. But even for that, he seems to be keeping a lot of distance from me, without giving me a proper reason. I don’t like the idea of marrying the person my family is looking for, but at the same time, I can’t imagine completely losing this person either. I feel completely stuck between what my heart wants and what my family expects from me. I genuinely don’t know what I’m supposed to do now. 🥺

Holding Space for a Distant Connection

The central conflict here lies in the friction between an active, self-imposed emotional pause and the momentum of family expectations. The confessor is anchoring their future to a connection that is visibly contracting, rejecting external marital prospects in favor of a relationship that exists largely as unexpressed potential. This creates a difficult emotional asymmetry: while the confessor is willing to absorb the friend's financial stress and offer unconditional support, the friend is actively seeking distance and establishing boundaries.

This distancing behavior suggests a mismatch in expectations that may already be felt, even if not explicitly discussed. By keeping feelings hidden while attempting to show them through actions, the confessor is caught in a state of limbo. They are trying to preserve a friendship that is fading, while simultaneously blocking out new paths their family is presenting. The difficulty of this position is that the silence designed to protect the friendship might actually be accelerating its decline, leaving the confessor isolated from both their desired partner and their family's plans.

Ultimately, the situation highlights the heavy toll of investing in someone else's potential comfort at the expense of one's own clarity. The hesitation to speak openly seems driven by a fear of a definitive rejection, yet the current ambiguity is what keeps them stuck.

Things Worth Thinking About

  • How does keeping feelings unspoken protect a relationship versus slowly eroding its foundation?
  • Can we truly support someone who is actively requesting distance and boundaries?
  • How do we balance family expectations when our emotional focus is entirely elsewhere?

Express ur love to him and find out what’s the actual issue .. this is ur life .. get married to someone whom you love .. but if he really don’t like to marry you or there is someone else in his life .. pls walk away .. you can’t force someone to love you even you do everything for them ..

Why wasting your time, energy and love on the person who is clearly not interested not even in meeting you ? simply cut him off na yr Give a chance to prospects your parents are bringing to you maybe there your feelings and efforts will be reciprocated. Galat insaan se aage badhogi tabhi toh right insaan milega life mein Warna ek galat insaan pe atke rahogi toh right insaan kaise ayega life mein aapke? Stop this childish one sided love yeh sb school tak hi sahi lagta hai Adult pe nahi Whether Man or Woman agar saamne se utna efforts nhi aarha hai jitna aap daal rahe ho simply move on It's not worth to waste your time , energy on them.

Accept that he doesn't love you back. It will save you so much time and energy. If you don't want to get married right now, that's completely okay. But you can't keep pouring everything into someone who won't do the same for you. It's draining you. Please put yourself and your feelings first.

I can feel how heavy this is for you. You're stuck between what your heart wants and what your family expects, and that's an incredibly tough place to be. 🥺 But please notice the signs - if he's asking for boundaries and avoiding meeting you, you have to respect that, no matter how strong your feelings are. Your feelings are valid, but so is his distance. Don't lose yourself waiting for someone who isn't matching your effort. You deserve someone who is excited to be there for you too. Take some time away from this friendship, focus on what YOU want from life - not just family pressure or this one person. Your career is stable, you are stable - give yourself that same love and care you want to give him. ❤️

Sometimes you have to accept that feelings cannot be forced. Tell him honestly once, without pressure, and respect whatever answer he gives. Don’t marry someone else just because of family pressure either—give yourself time to choose the life you truly want. ❤️

Tell him directly that u want to marry him and that ur family is looking for alliance and that u are currently rejecting them and wasting ur time and maybe an actual good alliance. If he understands, maybe he will acknowledge it and explain his position on it. Or if he directly denies, good for you. That's his personal choice and then move on from him. Don't play this game of "I want him in my life as a friend". It's evident in that case what will happen in the future if ur friend is a player. Instagram pe kitna hi jaan logi didi?

Take a break and work on yourself. Give him space and detach.

He is conscious. Tell him openly that you like him. And that you won't judge him. He will meet you.

Anonymous24 August 2026 at 2:14 pm

You have NEVER met him in person? It could be fake id/account. I hope you haven't loaned him any money. If you have, then consider it's gone. You are never getting it back.

If you propose, he may reject you. Just leave him alone. He will come back to you if he likes you. Give it some time.
