My husband forces us to live with his manipulative mother - Confession #C27956 | Corporate Confessions

My husband forces us to live with his manipulative mother

40 f My mother-in-law makes a lot of critical comments. She is a retired government high school teacher and holds an M.A. in Psychology. She knows how to manipulate and control people. Without ever admitting her own mistakes, she makes others feel guilty. She constantly taunts my 10-year-old son about food, because of which he has drastically reduced his eating. He even asks me, "Mom, I have become thin, right?" I do not maintain any physical or emotional relationship with my husband because he is forcing us to live with his mother. In that house, I am reduced to merely cooking, and my mother-in-law constantly uses filthy words regarding the household work I do. She always tries to assert that this is her house and that I must work exactly according to her wishes. She provokes me and simply wants someone to do the house chores. She uses my husband, who quit his job of 13 years at the age of 42. My mother-in-law, father-in-law, and husband all lash out at my son and expect him to act mature beyond his age. Yet, whenever he comes to me, they taunt him saying, "Why are you always trailing behind your mother?"—even though my husband still clings to his mother at the age of 42. My son then takes out all this frustration on me, and I feel deeply pained that I am unable to provide him with a healthy and peaceful environment. I work at a college, and I want to live separately so that I can give my son a peaceful atmosphere. I do not want to keep any relationship with my husband.

1)Move out with your son. Let him have a peaceful atmosphere at home. 2) consult an advocate. And check your options. 3) Gently remind your Mil that the house is also not hers because she also came from elsewhere. I mean what applies to you should apply to her also ( honestly I believe a matrimonial house belongs to all the women). But it's 3 against 1. So, do be careful in how you go about it.

Honestly, your son’s mental and emotional well-being should be the priority right now. If your mother-in-law constantly insults you, criticizes your son’s eating, and the home environment is full of stress, then wanting to live separately is not selfish or unreasonable. You should clearly tell your husband that having a separate home is necessary if the marriage is to remain healthy. However, I would not make a final decision about ending the marriage purely out of anger or frustration. First, try living separately and see whether your husband is willing to stand by you and your child. Most importantly, your son needs reassurance. He should not feel that he is the problem or that he has to behave like an adult to satisfy everyone. My honest opinion: Your request for a separate home is completely reasonable. If your husband continues to refuse and the situation keeps harming you and your son, then it is fair to seriously reconsider the future of the marriage

Contact a lawyer and take it legally Have all proofs like video, audio recordings etc. Don’t spare them. Remember narcissistic abuse keeps increasing with time.

You have made the correct decision. It's high time you moved out of this toxicity with your son. Both of you deserve a better and more peaceful life.

Your son’s emotional well-being should come first. ❤️ If living separately gives both of you a healthier and more peaceful environment, it’s reasonable to consider it. You’re financially independent, so don’t feel guilty about setting boundaries. Seek legal/family counselling advice before making major decisions, and protect your son from being caught in the conflict. 🌸

This situation should be looked at less as a “mother in law problem” and more as a family boundary and child wellbeing issue. If the son is being repeatedly criticised about food, appearance, or his behaviour, that needs to stop because a 10 year old should not be made to feel ashamed of himself at home. At the same time, the husband’s attachment to his mother is not automatically the problem. The real issue is whether he is willing to acknowledge his wife’s concerns, set reasonable boundaries, and create a respectful living arrangement. Living separately from parents does not mean abandoning them, it can sometimes be the healthiest way to preserve relationships. Since she is financially independent and wants to separate, she should have a calm, practical conversation with her husband about living arrangements and boundaries. If he refuses to cooperate, she can consider professional counselling and, if necessary, understand her legal options. Most importantly, she should avoid making the child the emotional mediator between the adults. He needs reassurance that his worth is not determined by his weight, food intake, or anyone’s criticism. The goal should not be to “win” against the mother in law, it should be to create a safe, respectful environment for the child and herself.

Move out and stay with your son. Don't let go of your share in the property. Seek legal help for the same.

Anonymous22 August 2026 at 12:11 pm

If you want to live 5 years more then leave that husband and house immediately else your mental health and son health both will be destroyed as you working not dependent on anyone you can live your life peacefully

Take your son and move out. You can afford it. I don't know why women are still choosing to live with toxic in-laws.

It’s really weird to see people working at educational institution ( supposed to shape others future) are suffering themselves at the age of 40.

Frankly you should develop some guts and get the hell out of that house with your son, only then they will realize your worth and his worth. Which grandparents treat their grandchildren like this??? And what does your husband do sitting at home, he doesn't do any work now after quitting his job? Why the hell did he quit his job?
