My mom’s outdated mindset is causing constant friction between us

I need to vent a bit and would really appreciate some advice. Yesterday, my mom and I got into a verbal argument during a family celebration over a disagreement. The core issue is that her mindset feels stuck in the '90s. She refuses to accept that times have changed, and she constantly pressures me to conform to her way of doing things, whereas I want to live life on my own terms. Don't get me wrong—I deeply respect her. She struggled, sacrificed, and saved every penny to give us a good education. But her mindset hasn't evolved with our current reality. I’m earning well now and want to enjoy the life I’ve built, but her traditional/frugal expectations keep causing friction between us. Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? How do you set boundaries and handle this without damaging the relationship?

Respect her financial decisions as you might understand that later. Don't have irrational spending and also make smaller FDs and invest in SIPs to ensure that your future is okay.

Respect her, but don’t live her life. Boundaries don’t mean distance. They mean peace. You got this.

I think the key is to separate respect from agreement. Your mother’s frugality and traditional mindset probably come from the circumstances she grew up in, where financial security meant saving and avoiding unnecessary risks. That doesn’t necessarily mean she is trying to control you or that her intentions are wrong. At the same time, you are an adult, financially independent, and living in a very different world. You don’t have to follow every belief or expectation simply because it worked for the previous generation. The healthiest approach may be to set boundaries without making her feel that her sacrifices or values are being dismissed. Instead of saying, Your mindset is outdated, explain, I understand why you think this way, but my circumstances are different and I want to make some decisions differently. You can respect her advice without being obligated to follow it. And if certain topics repeatedly lead to arguments, it’s perfectly reasonable to agree to disagree and avoid turning every family gathering into a debate. Ultimately, maintaining the relationship is more important than winning the argument. She can keep her values, and you can build your life around yours, both can coexist with mutual respect.

Tricky situation to handle. Maybe divide days as per her likeness and do small things for her, take/ask her advice before spending money aand rest enjoy the weekend or weekdays as per your choice. If you start asking her advice she will feel recognised for her experience

You are earning well now. But are you paying for your own food, clothes and shelter? Or you are still staying in your parents'/single mother's house, she is still bearing all your basic expenses and you are using you own earnings for spendthrifting? Your mom might be frugal because she had to raise a child/ren. You are childfree as of now, and may be not even paying for own basic needs.... Start paying her monthly for your share of (food+clothes+shelter), Save for future, And then remaining amount you can spend on anything you want. Learn more about 50-30-20 rule.
