My parents refuse to let me retire early despite my savings

M38, Singapore (From Kolkata). After B.tech from Kolkata i had completed CFA and FRM and currently Working as an executive director in one of the top banks of the world. Had been abroad for quite some years in different countries. Never married and don't want to get married too. Tried in online matrimony few years back but things never worked. Currently I am planning to retire in the next couple of years. I do have 10+CR in investment across many countries and I own 3 properties in Kolkata. I don't feel I need to work anymore. What to do with so much money if you don't have anyone to spend with after your parents?? I don't want to do donation or charity or so as I feel all those are corrupted things in india. I am a single child of my parents with no intentions to get married in future. Would like to see the world alone. Problem is my parents doesn't want to me to return from abroad neither they want me to get retired before 50 atleast. I am trying to convince them that i have enough savings to lead the rest of my life well in Kolkata but they are too rigid as they feel people will say they are keeping a non working guy at their place etc etc. My parents are still dreaming that i will get married and have kids, though I had made it clear always that I don't even want any relationships, marriage is never happening. Not sure what to do in this situation as I am not feeling much to work anymore and stay by the side of my old parents and also fulfill few of my dreams which I couldn't do in my 20s.

Parents basically think idol mind is a devils workshop and a big purse attracts bad friends and bad company. You can retire travel around make friends and enjoy life to the fullest but be carefull is what they mean ..As parents they are concerned. Even if you don't want to do charity you can do it in a way which involves you and you see results as your act of charity and become a circle of Blessings.

As a male even I see getting married is a concerning matter in a country where gender biased law exists... You can consider retiring and also consider adopting an orphan baby who will take ahead your legacy and he/she will bring happiness to your life. keeping small baby/pets do bring a lot of happiness...

Your parent are right. Once u will retire, u will feel that you are sitting idle. Its good to work for passion not for money.

At some point of life you need to bypass your parents word's for your mental peace. Don't delay it.

Anonymous2 August 2026 at 5:37 pm

Take a break not retirement directly to see how much you can live without work and for how many days. Purpose less life is also tough as you can see many retired people become toxic without work also.

Travel the world, not the popular places, take visa, stay for 3months in small , less explored places of any country.

You stay at home for 6 months for a trial you will understand what is loneliness.. I wish you could even get a female friend like me who knows how to spend the money in terms of enjoyment lol ..

take a sabbatical,go to your parents place n live for sometime, that will give you a practical picture of what you want to do with your life for the next 20 years,no marriage travel etc is your call, parents are saying out of peer pressure as society always gives a hard time to those who challenge societal norms, don't give much thought about it. But at the same time u should also experience what is the life you are expecting Vs what is the practical scenario.

Love the idea. Your discipline and consistency made you who you are today. Love it bro. Also, i was quite impressed by CFA and then FRM. How was your journey like? If you don’t mind sharing?

You can start some small business in India with minimal investment. You will be ur own boss so it won't be like you are not doing anything and you can travel world also.

Speaking my mind2 August 2026 at 10:52 pm

You are right, but I don't think your parents are wrong either. When someone has money and too much free time, there's always a possibility of getting involved in things they probably shouldn't. You may have no such intentions, but the possibility always exists. I would suggest that instead of continuing a full-time job overseas, you consider something less time-consuming, like freelancing or a part-time role. That way, you can still pursue your dreams while staying professionally active. As for your decision not to get married, that's completely your personal choice. But I do believe everyone needs a companion at some stage in life. Maybe not now, but perhaps later, especially in old age. Have you ever thought about that? Whether or not to have children is a separate decision. Many couples choose not to have kids and still lead happy, fulfilling lives while pursuing their dreams. Have you ever considered that option?

Anonymous User2 August 2026 at 5:31 pm

Parents have a very different mindset. They feel secured and proud enough to boost that there child is this + that. Having a child at home that too young nd married will bring a lot of questions in relatives and the society they stay in ....what all justification will they keep giving is tough...indeed tough if you look from a parents point view. Agree you have accumulated enough to enjoy a retaired life. Keep working nd be a reason serving the society. Make your life a reason with purpose.

Take a break for few years. With your kind of CV you will again find a job if you want to. Take a few years break to find out what you wanna do with your life. Maybe some other work where your interest lies or fund some good startups and help them grow with your knowledge. Lot of options. Don't go to live with your parents, stay alone and keep visiting them.

Anonymous2 August 2026 at 3:37 pm

Actually if I was ur parent I would have thought the same way..cz I want my boy to get married and I don't think any of girl or woman likes non working men or boy.. Aapko apke low times me partner ki zarurat hoti hi hai chahe kuch bhi ho...shayad ye baat apke parents behtar jante h... So please never judge ur parents

Anonymous3 August 2026 at 3:39 am

Take a break n travel. Also help young minds to grow like you are..

Anonymous2 August 2026 at 2:29 pm

Damm, it’s so true that few adults are still children

Anonymous2 August 2026 at 3:47 pm

Make plan for next 5-10 years and show it to them. Something like - 1. After working for 15+ years in corporate, my health is not very good. Here are my reports. So for next 2 years I will eat healthy, exercise, make my body good for slow travel. 2. Then I will slow travel 2 countries in a year for next 10 years. Here is the plan. 3. Simultaneously I will be building an off grid community like this - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085060361166&mibextid=ZbWKwL And so on.... You just have to 'inform' them. And do whatever you want to do. They must have been insisting on you to get married and reproduce. You didn't listen to them. Right? So why listen to this now?

Anonymous2 August 2026 at 7:06 pm

Take your parents to their favourite destinations and enjoy the journey and figure out next.

Anonymous2 August 2026 at 7:03 pm

You are 38 why are you listening to them live your life as you wish

Anonymous2 August 2026 at 6:34 pm

Retire as per the retirement age in India. When a person has enough money and retire early he uses the money for risky things. Example Start a business sell on credit then non payment py buyers or invest in share market then loss. So keep working

Anonymous5 August 2026 at 11:51 am

Bore nahi hote .. I also enjoy my own company .. I can eat alone in restaurants .. also do shoppings alone .. can watch movie in theatre alone .. maximum times I don't need any partner .. but sometimes I need a partner or friend .. so we can't leave alone .. after your parents what will you do ?

Anonymous2 August 2026 at 5:58 pm

I would suggest starting a business of your own and get out of corporate grind. Some small business to keep yourself busy but not too stressful. Enjoy your life, you have earned it! Take early retirement and travel the world

Anonymous2 August 2026 at 3:26 pm

If you have to put it here. U r personally not ready to face it. Take sebatical for few months and try out.

Retire as quickly as possible even tomoro.... And be with parents as their days are numbered. Else you'll regret it, not just miss the oppurtunity nlw that you have it at arms length. Last who cares if married or not, what parents want you to do, what they will think and society will think abt a guy lazing around...this is all crap, bcoz you are still not world matured, being busy with studies then work....nothing of that sort is a botheration , just wild guesswork from someone soon to be Vela. Vela mein hi mela (maza) hei.

Travel the world… that’s real life… don’t waste your time working till 50. Only few lucky people in this world have money, time and energy simultaneously. Don’t listen to your parents.

Anonymous3 August 2026 at 8:25 pm

Parents are right from their own perspective. You can take some time to break and introspect what you want in life. If you don't want marriage or companionship, adopt a child you will find a beautiful purpose in your life and also maybe your parents will accept you coming back to them.

Anonymous3 August 2026 at 2:20 am
