I pretended to be single to protect her from her toxic ex

I've read so many confessions here, and finally, I decided to write my own. This is going to be a bit long. Please don't insult or judge me. πŸ™πŸ» In 2025, during the final year of my Master's, I got introduced to a girl through one of my female friends. She was my friend's college friend. Within a few days of getting to know each other, we became quite close. She told me that she had broken up with her boyfriend of six years just a month earlier. Then, in January 2025, we got into a relationship. As time passed, our bond became deeper, and we grew emotionally and physically close. We were physically intimate four times. However, our mutual friend couldn't accept our relationship. She informed the girl's ex about everything. His ego was badly hurt. He was a very toxic and aggressive person. He re-entered her life and started mentally and physically abusing her. Since they lived in the same neighborhood, they saw each other almost every day, whereas I lived farther away. When I found out about all this, she told me that she had already ended the relationship from her side, but her ex had not accepted it. According to her, they had broken up and gotten back together countless times over the past six years. Then she made a request to me. She said she couldn't bear being blamed for ending a relationship she had devoted herself to for six years. Her ex was accusing her of leaving him because of me, and she wanted to prove that accusation wrong. She asked me to pretend that we were not in a relationship. The plan was to make her ex believe that our mutual friend had lied to create misunderstandings. Once her ex stopped blaming her, she said she would calmly explain everything to him and end things properly. Outwardly, we would pretend to be apart, but privately we would continue our relationship. I agreed. She cried a lot in front of me, and I genuinely felt sorry for her. I trusted her completely and did whatever she asked. To convince her ex, we lied repeatedly and acted out many situations. Eventually, we even managed to make our mutual friend appear to be the liar. After that, her ex finally stopped blaming her. And that was when the real story began. Suddenly, she started distancing herself from me, saying she was under pressure because of her studies. We stopped meeting. We stopped talking on calls. We only exchanged a few messages occasionally. She had time for everyone else, but never for me. Sometimes she even spoke to me harshly. As the distance kept growing, I slowly realized the truth. She had probably come into my life only because she couldn't move on from her ex. Emotionally and physically, I had become someone she leaned on until she no longer needed me. She had told me she had already moved on, but now I believe she never truly didβ€”and perhaps never could. After all, forgetting a six-year relationship isn't easy. I realized everything far too late. Maybe I'm just an emotional fool. I know many people will judge me for not understanding what was happening. But the truth is, at that time, I simply couldn't see it. She never openly said she wanted to break up with me. But every single one of her actions made me feel that she wanted me to leave her instead. One day, I asked her, "After everything we've been through, what if we still can't end up together?" She replied, "Then that is your destiny." I asked again, "And what about you? Don't you want to stay?" She remained silent. She didn't answer. Two months ago, I sent her one final message: "Start your new life. I will never come back into your life again. Take care." Then I blocked her. Even today, I don't know whether I did the right thing or the wrong thing. What do you all think? I'd genuinely appreciate your honest opinions. Just one requestβ€”please don't abuse or insult me. πŸ™πŸ»

Believing she moved on in just one month was a rookie mistake on your part. It's a lesson. And you did the right thing by putting an end to it.

From your own story, it seems you became her emotional support while she was still emotionally attached to her ex. Whether she did it intentionally or not, she wasn't ready for a new relationship. Your biggest mistake wasn't loving her. It was ignoring the gap between what she said and how she behaved. Once she stopped making time for you and stopped putting effort into the relationship, the answer was already in front of you. Walking away was probably the healthiest decision. Next time, don't build a future with someone who is still carrying their past.

>> they had broken up and gotten back together countless times over the past six years. >> Your mutual friend should have told you this. But looks like none of you is 'actual friend' to another. Just bunch of highschool kids creating drama because 'normal' life is sooo boring...

What you have gone through is deeply painful and you should never blame yourself because you only acted out of true love and sincerity. When a person loves someone deeply they trust them completely and that is exactly what you did for her. She used your emotions and your loyalty just to ease her own guilt and to clean her image in front of her toxic ex. She played with your feelings and used you as a temporary shoulder until she no longer needed you. Blocking her and walking away was absolute the right decision because someone who disrespects your emotions and leaves everything on destiny does not deserve your presence in their life. By walking away you saved your self respect and that shows the character of a strong and dignified man. You need to realize that you made no mistake you simply trusted someone who was never worthy of your sacrifices. Time will heal this pain and someone who truly values your devotion will eventually walk into your life and stay forever.

You were lucky that you were only in relationship and not married. With me after marriage she started martia affair and when i confessed her... Her words were "Acha hua tumhe pata lag gaya mai tumko bolne wali thi" eventually we have been divorced mutually but till date she is there in the soft corner of my heart. So it's good you at least came to know before starting your new chapter. And you did the right thing by blocking her and sending her last good bye message. There will be a day when she will realise what she did.
