Roommate's Jealousy Over My New Relationship

27F. I’m writing this confession because I genuinely feel helpless. I work in the corporate sector in Bangalore and share the rent for a 2BHK apartment with another person. Recently, my roommate and I had a huge fallout over an issue, and I’m seeking your advice about it. My roommate is my childhood friend, and this conflict has affected me deeply on an emotional level. A couple of months ago, I started dating one of my colleagues from work. We barely knew each other before, but in just two months our relationship has grown incredibly deep, and I now want to live with my partner. This relationship came into my life after a long period of being single, and that loneliness had been eating away at me for years. My family, especially my mother, has been quite supportive of both this relationship and my desire to spend my life with my partner. On the other hand, my roommate has been in a long-term relationship for quite some time. Their partner lives abroad and would visit two or three times a year, staying for a few days or sometimes even a few weeks before leaving. I never objected to that. But ever since my relationship began, whenever my partner comes over and we want to spend a week together, or when my partner wants to stay with me every night, my roommate creates a huge scene, saying that it feels awkward and uncomfortable. Before my current partner came into my life, many of my friends—and even my ex—would stay over from time to time, and my roommate never had a problem with it. But now that my current partner and I want to spend every night together, everything has changed. This is a new relationship, and we genuinely feel that spending our time outside office hours together is important if we want to nurture it and help it grow. At the same time, neither my partner nor I are in a financial position right now to rent a place together. Finding a house in Bangalore is difficult as it is—those who live here probably know exactly what I mean. So, what should I do? I truly want to preserve my relationship.

1. Is your roommate female? If so, why did you call her "they"? If not, why would he like your partner's intrusion? 2. Learn some skills that pay better than content writing and rent a separate flat.

If she's a good friend, sit down with her and have a genuine conversation about what the real problem is. Moreover, having a man over every night can make a roommate uncomfortable. She's not being entirely unfair. Try reducing it to 2-3 times a week. Spending time together outside office hours doesn't always have to be in your apartment. Go on dates, take walks, or spend time elsewhere. You could go to his place too. Don't lose a good friendship over a love interest.

She must be insecure by thinking about ur future compatibility with ur bf that u might take a new flat after the relationship goes well..

Anonymous15 July 2026 at 10:14 pm

1. Talk to her. Ask her directly what the exact problem is. 2. Start looking to move out. Keep searching — you might find a room within your budget. 3. You and your partner can shift together. He must be staying in a rented place too. This isn’t only your problem. If your partner wants to spend time with you, he needs to be part of finding a solution too.

Right now confessor is staying with 1 person (her friend) and both are contributing. In future if the confessor moves out with her partner then also there will be 2 people contributing to the rent. So going for a rented accommodation should not be a problem. But why is it so important to spend entire night with the partner if the confessor could elaborate that will be helpful. Is the confessor looking at marriage in future? If after spending countless nights either of them realise the night outs were not as good as the day hanging around then will they split? As for the roommate her objections are perfectly fine. She has every right to decide whether a person of opposite sex should frequently come at their place and treat it as his own residence. The confessor may try to showcase the roommate as someone who is jealous. But honestly everyone has their own comfort with unmarried people

Your roommate’s demands are unrealistic. This is why it is important to discuss scenarios before you become roomies. If there wasn’t any discussion, then you both have a right to assert rights over the shared space, for which, I am assuming, rent is equally split. You mentioned an ex coming over in the past & staying overnight. It seems you are ok to become intimate with bfs. At 27, you have been intimate with at least 2 guys. Since, you mentioned that you wish to PRESERVE your friendship, it’s natural to assume you would associate longevity with bf also. If yes, stop sleeping around with men (bf). Instead focus on finding a worthy partner who would value you. Your roomie’s reservations about your bf’s stays, are a blessing in disguise…..that’s if you value yourself.

Move out and live in a colive or smaller 1bhk together, it works out cheaper. Why cant you move out and what's the rent that you pay.

My advice after focusing ONLY on the "Financial" aspect of the post: BUY a house... Out my experience: COST of BUYING a house in Bengaluru, is CHEAPER than in DELHI, CHENNAI, PUNE or even COIMBATORE..... while the COST of RENTING a house in Bengaluru, is COSTLIER than in DELHI, CHENNAI, PUNE and around THREE TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE than in COIMBATORE.....

Just joke - Arrange one partner for your friend also, then she won't fight with you.

Anonymous16 July 2026 at 10:30 am

Try to make less noise when you and your partner spends time together in a room.

Jealousy, this guy either thought you as worthless somewhere in some corner of his mind all-along....or he loves you, which will raise its head soon.... Eitherways, why don't you go over to your partner place, to have peaceful, or even intimate nights....even if done half of the times, this way 50% of the problem will be over... Last not least offer him 10% more rent on the days he comes, and some chocolate , so he doesn't feel envious or jealous....no bigger disease in the planet than jealousy. On the day your bf comes, pls show him 1% extra affection as well, kaliyug hei...kisi ki khusi dekhi nai jaati

All previous stays were of acceptable guests duration. Your current BF is staying like a 3rd flatmate. So start sharing rent+food bills for him as well. And don't have loud sex. May be that's disturbing her.

Anonymous16 July 2026 at 9:17 pm

1. Get married to him and find ur own place 2. Get your own place and then spend ur nights together !!

Having someone come over to few times in a year is different than someone coming every single day. If I was your roommate I’d be irritated too! I’d won’t be comfortable coming to the home I am paying rent for and my roommates bf hanging out in the apartment everyday! Pls ask ur boyfriend to pay rent , looks like the apartment is being used by 3 people at the cost of 2!
