Need some genuine career advice. I work in the U.S. as a Product Manager. My manager and I are both originally from India, but he came here on L1 and I came here to pursue masters, and I’m struggling with how to handle the work environment. Since joining, I’ve been told things like: “You don’t look like someone who has done a master’s degree.” “If this had been your interview presentation, I would never have hired you.” “You’ll never be a successful Product Manager in your entire life.” The criticism is rarely about how to improve and it’s mostly personal and demoralising. On top of that, I’m currently handling around eight different projects while another colleague who joined around the same time, she is responsible for only one. Despite taking on most of the heavy lifting, I’m still the one getting yelled at. I’ve tried changing my approach. I now ask for guidance before making decisions, but I’m still criticized. My manager has even told me things like, “Office se bahar nikalunga…” and often speaks to me in Hindi using abusive language. Some people have advised me to “only do what you’re paid for” and stop going above and beyond. The problem is that isn’t how I like to work. I genuinely care about doing a good job, but I’m starting to feel mentally exhausted. I’m already looking for another job, but the market is tough right now. Has anyone dealt with a manager like this in the U.S.? How did you protect your mental health? Did you confront the manager, speak to HR, transfer teams, or simply leave? At what point do you decide that no amount of hard work is going to change the situation? I’m looking for honest advice from people who’ve been through something similar.

There are Indian managers who will prey on people they deem non confrontational. If it seems like you will take his bullshit with no complaint, he will keep on doing this to you. You need to start asserting yourself and DOCUMENT everything, even with personal memos to self.

Change company or atleast project. No one can deal with narcissist and remain sane.
Bhai karta reh... job isliye mila kyunki tu kaabil hai.... people will say a lot of things if u dont live upto their expectation. Yeh har kisi ka nature hota hain.... tu bas apna man lagake kaam karta rahe... aur bhaukne de jise bhaukna hain....
Tha mere pass ek manager aisa. I was a hot blood fresher back then. I tried everything par he didn't listen. One day I snapped and yelled back and picked up bottle. That day, he was hesitant to share bathroom with me. Speak up. The more you allow them to push you the more they will.
