I need suggestions regarding my mid life crisis: Hello, I am 37 year guy from north india earning 20 lpa (excluding other company benefits). But over time if I stay in my job could rise to upto 60lpa but will take time which is sufficient to have upper middle class life in my city. Plus my company has given me SUV, fuel and maintenance expense, subsidy for house loan. Job is permanent nature with rare cases of termination in history. Present status. I hv home with loan of 1 Cr. However I have equivalent savings as well, slightly more may be additional 30 lakh. My house current valuation is around 3 cr. Moreover, I hv family asset worth 7-8cr approx. as I am only son I will inherit it. Since company gives subsidy in loan, I hv not repaid it. House rental income now is 40k. This is enough to support my children's present school fees in reasonable standard school in my city. My present job will give me a set life where I can have reasonably good life. but cons is transfers could be out of my home city frequently. However, I personally don't crave much for materialistic life. Now I am in mid life crisis phase where I crave to have positive impact through intellectual engagement but job seems now like a regular engagement. It's Pvt job but I don't feel pressurized. I am thinking of doing PhD abroad if I get full scholarship with stipend. That will probably take me to area of my interest but that's a risk as well. Other option is doing PhD in my city but it will have lesser value as university not recognized internationally and may not give me freedom to focus on study as I will be continuing my job. Any person who had similar confusions and could suggest me a wise decision I would love to hear. If you hd similar situation in life and have overcome this with excellence, pls share your insight. Or if you may have seen some relative or friend doing the same and sailed successfully this transition phase. I want genuine advices so I could take best decision. Anyone who has done PhD, in research or academia after few years of corporate life in lesser pay pls suggest. Thank you

If u think, u have midlife crisis. Then statistically, more than 90% Indians should be in mid-life disaster (more than crisis) in their life regardless of their age 😀🤷‍♂️

I overcome mid-life criss like yours by flipping reels 24*7—hanging upside down in the bed. I have no scope for worries or regrets. You too should be decisive like me.

No crisis can be better than safety.... work for the society, it will give you a purpose, go on run every morning, if you want to do something on our own learn coding, invest in yourself and don't stake your life on PhD... do a distance phd if possible alongside your job

Don't rock the boat! Sail smoothly. If you miss adventure drama do it in controlled manner occasionally.

Stay where you are. Don’t take major risks. Start a side hustle instead to satisfy your intellectual cravings. Life abroad is not easy either if things are going well then don’t disturb it.

Is there a job market for phds? After phd you will earn lesser than what you’re currently earning!

Anonymous29 June 2026 at 11:53 pm

All jobs become routine, which is expected. Please think of the risks. PhDs aren't employable as before, and academia pays less. Don't be rash in your decision making. Develop a hobby. Volunteer in your spare time. Focus on the family. So many ways to mitigate the boredom when staying with the stable job. Best Regards.
